We StyleChicks frequently tout a Vitamin C Serum for day and Retinol Serum for night skin care program. Regardless of age, this powerful combo addresses most skin concerns and makes skin the best it can be outside of the dermatologist or plastic surgeons’ office. A topical Retinol/Vitamin C plan requires regular exfoliation to remove dead skin and reveal the fresh, new improved skin underneath.

With all the exfoliating creams, scrubs, and facial brushes that abound, this should be an easy task. But the Retinol/Vitamin C serum combo can leave skin sensitive and occasionally dry and irritated, so not every exfoliation product can do the job. Even some of the sensitive skin brand exfoliating washes and scrubs are too rough for Retinol and Vitamin C users. A good product we recently started to use is Marlskin Exfoliating Beauty Scrub. Powerful enough to get the job done, yet soothing enough to leave skin smooth without irritation.

WHY EXFOLIATE?

If you’re not on a Retinol and Vitamin C Serum program, it’s still important to exfoliate. A tell-tale sign of aging is dullness. A lackluster appearance to the skin is in part due to the decreased rate of skin cell renewal that occurs as we age. New, younger looking skin remains underneath, but it requires gentle, consistent exfoliation to reveal this younger skin.

Exfoliation is also important for acne prone skin. It’s necessary to remove the dead skin that not only looks dull, dry and old but can also trap oil and debris resulting in acne and blackheads. Topical acne medications are often drying and create flaky skin that needs exfoliation before applying the acne treating products or attempting to conceal blemishes with makeup.

The right exfoliation program can remove the lackluster skin, keep acne at bay and help your skincare products sink deeper into the skin, where treating ingredients can do their job. But too much exfoliation or too rough an exfoliant can do more harm than good, damaging delicate skin tissue. But too weak an exfoliating scrub is a waste of time and money.

MARLSKIN EXFOLIATING BEAUTY SCRUB: MEET THE TRICKY EXFOLIATION SCRUB BALANCE

The skin on our faces, neck, shoulders and decolletage all can benefit from exfoliation before applying any beauty product including moisturizer, acne treatments, and serums such as Vitamin C or Retinols. These products cannot do their job if dry, dead skin reduces absorption. The deeper the Retinol and Vitamin C penetrates the skin, the better the skin will look – reducing wrinkles, sagging, dark spots and acne scars. Exfoliating is crucial.

WHAT MAKES MARLSKIN EXFOLIATING BEAUTY SCRUB SPECIAL

Marlskin Exfoliating Beauty Scrub has naturally emollient ingredients, gets skin very clean, and the exfoliating agents aren’t abrasive but still remove dead skin.
SCRUBBING BEADS OF HEALING OILS
Exfoliating scrubs with bits of pumice, grains or nuts can often be too rough on delicate skin. Marlskin Exfoliating Beauty Scrub uses exfoliating beads made of Camelina Sativa Oil, which is a healing oil high in Omega fatty acids, Vitamin E, and antioxidant properties. These beads make for a gentle friction while the face is massaged with the scrub until the beads melt into the healing and treating oil until washed away.

Jojoba Esters are another ingredient that is commonly used as a gentle exfoliating bead because the Jojoba is highly emollient and soothing to the skin. Very similar to the composition of the skin, Jojoba Esters can smooth, heal and protect the skin without causing irritation or breakouts. The beads slowly melt during the massaging/exfoliating process, gently infusing the skin with Jojoba while removing dead skin.

HOW TO USE MARLSKIN EXFOLIATING BEAUTY SCRUB

Massage the skin in small circles with the product until the exfoliating beads melt and then rinse. Apply your regular moisturizer and topical skincare products. Personally, I like to put a wet, warm facecloth on my face for a few minutes before exfoliating to soften any dead skin and enhance the exfoliation process. And it makes the process feel more spa-like. It smells very fresh but not medicinal.

RESULTS

I was pleased with how my skin did not feel tight or raw after using the Marlskin exfoliating scrub. My skin felt very clean, and my pores looked smaller without feeling too tight as some cleansers can leave the skin. It also lessened the appearance of fine wrinkles including the eleven line on my forehead between my eyebrows. Dry skin around my nose, forehead, and jawline was gently removed without irritation.

I can use the Marlskin Exfoliating Beauty Scrub and immediately apply my Retinol as usual without experiencing irritation or stinging of my skin, even around delicate areas of the face. Use one to two times a week keeps my skin soft and flake-free. How often you need to use it depends on how aggressive your topical skincare program is in cell turnover.

I also used the scrub on my throat, shoulders and upper chest, and I was surprised by how much dead skin I had on my throat and neck. When this dead skin was removed, my throat skin looked so much younger and smoother! There’s also a healthy glow to the skin after use, and my skin felt very smooth and hydrated.

AREN’T THERE STRONGER EXFOLIATING SCRUBS AVAILABLE?

Yes. If you’re used to drugstore brand exfoliants that scrub and scour the skin until visible large flakes of skin come off, Marlskin may feel like less effective results. But this is a good thing for topical skincare users. Here is why:

There are scrubs that remove more dead skin per use than Marlskin does. However, massive sloughing per exfoliation session is NOT the goal of the topical skin serum user. The removal of dead surface skin should be at the same pace as the topical products skin cell turnover rate. Gentle exfoliation should be a regular part of a skin care program so not every exfoliating session should result in massive dead skin debris removal, it should only be the dead skin cell turnover since your last exfoliating session, skin that is ready to be removed without harming underlying skin. More exfoliation that this is just irritating the new fresh skin that already is soft and smooth.

CONCLUSION:

MarlSkin provides an excellent maintenance exfoliating scrub that can be the unsung superstar of a good topical skincare regimen. If you use Vitamin C Serums, Retinol, topical acne treatment products, or at-home Glycolic Peels, these will all be much more effective with the regular use of a quality exfoliation with Marlskin Exfoliating Beauty Scrub.
